I just blew up and just replaced my 2003 turbo/manifold. The part cost $1700 and the total cost (parts plus installation) was $2300. Please don't buy a cheap turbo, you'll only end up doing the job again.
Consider this, which you may or may not know already, when your turbo blows, it ***** all the oil out of your engine and seizes the engine. Additionally all the oil that was pulled out of your engine is pushed through your catalytic converter and your exhaust. I had to buy the turbo/manifold and the exhaust. The only reason my engine didn't seize is….I run my car on waste vegetable oil and the fuel acts as a natural lubricant and kept my engine from seizing!
But, the point is: buy a warranted manifold/turbo, make sure you always use full synthetic oil (and NOT Delo or whatever they sell at AutoZone) and you'll get many, many more miles from your TDI.
