Car is Blowing out Black smoke (anyone know about cars?)?

Ok, so i have an older car… its a 96 Pontiac Sunfire (manual) who has had its share of ups and downs as expected… today i started my car and it was jumping.. or backfiring i should say.. i noticed the rpms changing from 1 to 2 uncontrollably and the exhauust was shooting out black smoke and smelled. I let it run for a little and the black smoke changed to clear again.. but it still shoots out sometimes and the car backfires while driving the entire time.. anyone have any ideas.. the car isnt worth much …. if the cost is more than the car..i may just junk it..

Even the best trained GM technician wouldn't know immediately what's wrong with your car and would need to bring it up to date on all the tune-up items (like new spark plug wires if you've never installed them). He would make sure your air and fuel filters were good and check your PCV valve as well as any computer error codes he'd read out from your computer. So all the basic maintenance items would be checked to make sure they're good and then he would begin diagnosing any problems that remained. For example, maybe your timing belt slipped and needs replacing, but that's an $800 job. Try getting a new set of spark plug wires if they've never been changed and see how it runs.

Have you checked your oil? Check that first. Without oil, you will blow your engine. It's quite possible you've been burning oil, and didn't know it. Most of the time it's a broken valve seal that causes oil loss. The auto parts stores have stop leak for oil that also cuts down, and after a few treatments stops the smoke as well. Also, have your exhaust system checked. It's possible a critter built a nest. Only a mechanic can accurately diagnose your problem. These are merely possibilities. Good luck to you!

Don't listen to Thomas he will make you look like an idiot, your car is fuel injected not carborated(no car made that late is).there are a lot of things that could be wrong with your car, from the minor to quite major with those symptoms, best to take it to a shop in this case. Good luck I hope its nothing major.

Check your oil. See if you still have enough in it when is the last time you changed it. Im not a mechanic sorry but you do need one because I know a friends car acted the same way before he it needed a tow truck after it died. :/ good luck
