Repair my car Or junk it and buy new?

allistaken1 asked:

I have a 93' Plymouth Acclaim with around 120K Miles, 1 past owner before me.

It needs a new transmission and coolant leak fix, which I was quoted it would cost around $1500 (minimum) total to fix everything. The engine runs very well, and its in relatively good condition besides the needed repairs.

I'm a college student, and must be conservative with my money, but I do need a working car. So should I get the repairs done, or scrap the car and buy a used car? In my market, the range for a used car would be $3000 – $5000 – but I really was hoping not to spend this kind of money right now. I bought the car just $750, 5 years ago.

If you give an opinion, please tell my why you think this. Thanks!
