why are we scared to abandon oil?
crazy8s123 asked:
i live in santa cruz ca which prides itself on being nuclear free this is retarded when you can consider that a nuclear class aircraft carrier runs for 50 years on 1/2 a pound of fuel, when you take in chernoble and other accidents, you also must factor in that the computers, cars, and planes of that time were junk technology wise compared to today also. so what are we scared of??? the waste can bed dealt with much easier than carbon monoxide.

Because people are always afraid of change.

Actually I nuclear waste cannot be dealt with as easily as the proponents of nuclear want you to believe. There are thousands of tons of it now and no one has come up with anything even remotely satisfactory for dealing with it long term.
There has never been any technology that can safely deal with the nuclear waste for even 1% of it's projected danger time, what we do to the future generations is how we will ultimately be judged.
Factor in the amount of emissions used in building new plants, and the greenhouse gasses produced in mining and refining the nuclear fuel and it's not the pannacea they want you to believe.
I'm not saying we dont need to build nuclear but it needs to be considered very very carefully.
Nuclear power is NOT emission free, never has been and never will be.
I can promise you people are NOT afraid to abandon oil, but there has to be a reasonable smart replacement, it doesnt exist yet

Simply because by abandoning oil the wealthy would lose money, and you know we can't have that. As you said there are many alternatives, but unfortunately there are still people that don't believe in global warming, natural disasters, and science.

Wake up, currently everything depends on oil including the making of most products. Not to mention that nuclear ran ships have the insecurity that there might be radiation leak, as seen in past history when the Russian submarine off the coast of the US did. Furthermore, in order to transport the raw goods to use as other energy you need to use oil or coal. Electrical cars must be powered off electricity which in turn is made from burning coal most of the times, though sometimes in areas where there is dams or windmills that are used for an alternative source of energy.
Hope my answer helps!

The primary source of electrical power in the US is coal, not oil, I'd agree that it has possibilities but the waste is an issue. Short of burying it in some deep hole in the ground we can't get rid of it, I'd rather we invested in Solar/Wind farms and wave generators.
Nuclear waste is highly toxic, if it gets out of the 'safe houses' we bury it in it can contaminate the water table that runs throughout the ground.
So I don't think we are scared to abandon oil we are reluctant to spend large quantities of money on technology that for right now isn't as efficient or cheap as coal/oil and the remaining alternatives.

we aren't scared to abandon oil but we dont have a choice. it's not in their interest to make us stop because they are raking in huge profits and they're the ones making the decisions. this country has been bought and sold off a long time ago.

All questions of safety and environmental issues aside, you are confusing the energy problem with a fuel problem. Nucular power is not practical for vehicles smaller that a good sized ship. There is no practical way to use nuke to power a tractor trailer, an airliner, or an automobile. Even if we had the ablity to generate unlimited cheap clean, electicity, most vehicles would still need fuel.

Nuclear waste is a hellofa lot more persistant, sneaky,
and dangerous than CO, which breaks down by itself
in a realatively short time.
We're going to be forced to 'go nuke', but we had
better be damned careful about it.

We are not scared of abandoning oil. It just so happens that oil has become an indispensable necessity. The whole network of transportaion (road/rail/sea/air) is oil based. Can you imagine the universal upheaval if we were to drastically abandon oil. There is so much capital tied up in this system that the gurus would not let it go easily.
Practical alternate sources of energy are still not even on the drawing boards. To perfect these and make them commercially viable will take ages. And finally, nuclear may be the answer for land based and marine applications, but in other forms of transport it is still not available. Nuclear waste disposal is under control and not a critical factor at this stage.
